It’s night two in San Francisco and we were pumped to go out for some good ol’ rhythm and blues down at the awesomely named “Boom Boom Room” BUT…when DITA VON TEESE comes to town you don’t turn a girl down.
So it’s off to the legendary “Fillmore” (http://thefillmore.com/) for some laughs, old time music and a whole lot of raunch. After a pretty long wait in line with the rest of the crowd dressed up to the vaudeville nines we finally get inside (not a minute too soon, since the wasted prostitute who was slowly working her way up the line looking for a bit of coin was getting a bit too close for comfort).
It’s a beautiful old venue (offering free apples as you walk in for some reason?) complete with chandeliers, velvet drapes and box seats in the upper balcony. I tried to take a couple of sneaky photos (there was no photography allowed) but this was the best of them…sorry.
Then after a steady build-up of old-school big band and salsa grooves, its time for the fabulous “Mr” Murray Hill to take to the stage and start the show. This guy was definitely a highlight for me- the jokes were crude, the suit was over-tight and the gender confusing but I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard.
But the real star of the night is the lovely Dita who gives us a variety of burlesques including a swim in a martini glass, a ride on a mechanical bull, some cross-dressing (and cross-undressing) and finally a beautiful Asian-themed finale set to a very cool reworking of the Cures’ “Lullaby”. She’s ably supported by nipple tassle extraordinaire “Dirty Martini”, a French “bro-lesque” guy, the operatic and over-the top “Prince Poppy-cock” and a 3 foot lady on a motorcycle (“I only care about 3 things in life: Money, Dick and Weed!”).
A great show in a great venue. And all of this on a Wednesday! Really looking forward to what else San Francisco’s got to offer us tomorrow night…
